Victoria
joined MBDA in September 2004 after graduating from UCL with a degree in
Mechanical Engineering.
"I was attracted by the graduate scheme. It's very structured and lets me work towards chartered status with the IMechE. You are encouraged to move around the company and get as broad a knowledge base as possible, that's important because when you come out of university you don't know what working is like."
So far Victoria has had three placements - 6 months in Design, 3 months in Materials and 3 months external placement in Procurement.
"In Design I was involved in the redesign of a part which would be subjected to higher temperatures than had been anticipated. I researched different materials and processes and came up with a suggestion that eventually went into production."
"When I moved to Materials I was able to expand my interest in new materials and worked on a number of hands-on projects looking at why parts had failed."
" Procurement is very different but I get to see how the business side of the company works and get some finance and project management skills."
"I'm also a science and engineering ambassador going to schools to teach children about science, maths and technology, doing things like robotics and rocketry. These activities are great fun and also help with my chartership, which I'm working towards with advice from my Mentor and Technical Co-ordinator who are always on hand to help with any queries or problems I have."
