Sensors (RF) 10 Month Placement, Bristol

Our Radio-Frequency (RF) department works on projects that cover the whole product lifecycle from research and development through to full product design and production. The role covers Radio-Frequency Systems & Datalinks technologies with applications including systems design work, hardware and firmware.

You will be able to perform highly scientific technical investigations, provide problem assessments and design solutions within a culture of innovative thinking.

You will develop expertise in innovative RF systems, communications and datalinks, and how these interact with other subsystems to form part of the wider missile system. Hands-on testing, integrating and designing industry leading hardware and system components.

You will gain an understanding in the following areas:

  • A variety of radio frequency subsystems including data communications; radars and radio altimeters, typically operating between 1 and 18GHz.
  • Specification and assessment of RF products to support development, production and in-service programmes via interaction with UK and European colleagues and suppliers
  • Development, procurement, parameterisation, verification and/or validation of complex hardware performance models (e.g. Matlab, Simulink or similar)
  • Monitoring supplier and technology roadmaps and identifying cutting edge and future technologies for investment
  • Research and design activities in collaboration with French, Italian and/or German colleagues

Through the placement you’ll get to apply your university learning to our projects and impact their direction. We’ll set you varied and stimulating work, from computational modelling through to lab and field trials and with projects at different phases of the product lifecycle. Our experienced technologists can offer you support and mentorship through your placement and you’ll get to work with other departments across the wider technical community, including customers and suppliers.

Entry Criteria
  • Currently studying towards a Degree in applied physics, electronics, engineering or any other related subjects
  • Good presentation and communication skill
  • A passion for applying your university learning to real-world engineering and technology projects

00 Application Process

1. Submit an application

Our application form contains a few factual questions, some questions relating to the role you have applied for and a section for you to tell us all about you! 

2. Online assessment

Some of our Graduate, Summer placement and 10 month placement roles will require you to take a Diagrammatical, verbal and numerical reasoning test. Apprentice applicants will take a Strengths based assessment.  

3. Internal review

Hiring Managers assess your application and assessment results and shortlist for our assessment centres. 

4. Assessment centre

Our Strength based assessment centre is a virtual experience! You’ll get to work on a range of tasks, meet current programme members and people from the department you have applied for. All candidates receive feedback on their performance.  

5. Offer

We’ll call you shortly after your assessment day to talk through your feedback and the finer details of your offer, as well as next steps.

Training and Development

You’ll be able to choose between a variety of online learning platforms such as Percipio, YouLearn, Career Builder and Video Gateway. Each one is tailored to a specific type of learning. Speak to your line manager to find out more. 

We encourage new learning and will provide up to £150 in financial support per year if you wish to participate in further study in your own time. You’ll have access to our Learning Gateway, which hosts the formal course catalogue and is where you can select the right training for your role and future development. The catalogue displays which courses are being delivered virtually or are classroom based. If you want to lead a team, you might be interested in our management training, designed for people of all experience levels. 

Dynamic Working

The way we work is changing and your schedule will reflect that. For non-executive employees, we have a flexi-time scheme that allows you to choose, within certain parameters, when you start and finish each day and how you can use time you have accrued. If you have worked the time, you are also able to accrue and take up to 15 days of Flexi-leave per annum, in addition to the 25 days of annual leave provided and bank holidays.

Security Clearance

All graduates at MBDA are required to hold UK Security or BPSS Clearance. To gain this clearance you are required to hold a UK passport and to have resided in the UK for the previous 5 years. If your application to MBDA is successful, we'll need to check your eligibility, which means seeing your birth certificate and/or passport. Security vetting will also be undertaken.

All employees/Apprentices at MBDA are required to hold UK Security or BPSS Clearance. To gain this clearance you are required to meet the government standard for eligibility. If your application to MBDA is successful, we'll need to check your eligibility, which means seeing your birth certificate and/or passport and educational certificates. Security vetting and medical clearance will also be undertaken.
