Electronics 10 Month Placement 2021

Electronics 10 month Placement, Stevenage

The responsibility of the Electronic Engineering function is to provide MBDA programmes with electronic equipment (for missiles, test equipment and launch systems). The electronic equipment we design ranges from weapon controller units and actuator electronics to telemetry & communication systems.

The products we design must be able to function in exceptionally harsh environments. It is also vital that our designs are extremely reliable and extremely safe. As well as this, our complex equipment usually has to fit into very confined spaces. These design constraints make the equipment we design very specialised which means we require original ideas and innovative approaches to the way we design our electronic products.

What’s the opportunity?

You will be assigned to an actual missile project and given real work that will form part of a missile system that will be brought into service with armed forces around the world. The placement will be split in to two: the first you'll be embedded in our Missile Design team, who focus on the prime Missile Design and the second as part of our Test Systems team, who focus on designing the test solutions that test and prove our prime design.

  • Complex circuit design (Analogue, Digital, FPGA etc.) for computers, Safety related products, datalinks, ground/firing equipment etc.
  • Analogue and Digital circuit test techniques and circuit design;
  • Microwave / RF test measurement techniques and design;
  • Analysis and characterisation techniques.
  • Test system design, testability of a design.

You will be working with highly talented and experienced engineers from a large range of engineering disciplines. This will allow you to develop and broaden technically and professionally within a multi-skilled team. As well as this, you will have the opportunity to be mentored and coached by experienced engineers in the art of designing electronics for military products.

All the training schemes within Electronics Engineering are accredited with the IET. Registration at Eng. Tech level is a possibility for undergraduates who have 2+ Summer Industrial Placements. MBDA can help in achieving this registration during the Placement period.

What will you be doing?

You will be spending time both in the lab and in the office, gaining exposure to laboratory work, PCB Layout, Circuit Design & Simulations (using tools such as LTSpice & Zuken), test procedures and task package management.

You may have occasion to travel to other MBDA sites, both in the UK and abroad, as well as having opportunities to support local schools in extra-curricular STEM activities, such as Robot Rumble.

What's in it for you?

You'll no doubt have seen all the information on our website about our comprehensive and customisable benefits package. For a reminder click here (please note that not all benefits are available to our summer placement and undergraduate students).

What are we looking for?

  • Currently studying towards a Degree in electronic engineering, general engineering (with electronics), or related subjects (maths or physics based).
  • Motivated and committed with good organisational skills and an appetite for learning new skills.
  • Interest in electronic engineering, technology, and engineering in general.
  • Practical knowledge of common software languages (C/C++, VHDL, etc.) is beneficial but not essential.

MBDA is committed to providing an inclusive working environment where our employees can be themselves and everyone has equal opportunity to reach their full potential. We value difference and know that a diverse community makes for greater innovation and brings a breadth of skills, experience and perspectives.

All graduates, undergraduates and apprentices at MBDA are required to achieve the appropriate clearance relevant to their respective role. Some roles, may be reserved for UK nationals and certain categories of information may be restricted to UK nationals also. To gain suitable clearance individuals will need to have lived in UK for up to 5 years dependent on the level of clearance required.
