The Opportunity

Our four-year degree programme forSupportability Engineer apprentices is a fantastic opportunity to work in a unique area of the business where the worlds of Engineering and the Customer meet, whilst also studying towards a fully funded Bachelor’s Mechanical Engineering degree. The degree is achieved through studying at the University of Hertfordshire on a minimum of day release basis during the programme.

When not at Uni, you will work within the Customer Support and Services team and other associated engineering departmentson rotational placement. This way of studying allows you to earn an academic and nationally recognised qualification, as well as gain hands on learning experience within a professional and friendly workplace.

What you will be doing

This scheme will focus on product lifecycle with a specific emphasis on supportability. Placements within this scheme include:

  • Supportability Engineering

  • In-Service Teams

  • Support Services

  • Mechanical / Electronic Engineering

  • Human Factors

  • Training and Field Support Engineering

  • Technical Publications

This will enable you to obtain experience throughout various parts of the products life-cycle (concept through to in-service). The CSS organisation offers you customer facing, supplier and internal working with multiple stakeholders across the business. You will be able to apply your engineering learning and knowledge in all of the various functions through roles / objectives set to support our project teams / functional needs including improvement and adoption of new and emerging technologies.

As an apprentice you will work within additional engineering departments within MBDA which cover the basic values of engineering listed below;

  • Product Reliability

  • Electronic / Mechanical Engineering

  • Computer Aided Design (CAD)

  • Human Factors

Again, reinforcement of those skills will be through helping to support project teams or functional activities.

As well as a variety of placementsyou willhave the opportunity to undertake developmental training and support:

  • An induction event that allows you the opportunity to interact with all ECP new-starters, and integrate into the business

  • 2 x 1 week residential courses to develop skills, such as team working, business communication, presentation and project management skills.

  • 2 day career development workshop at the end of the scheme to assist you moving from an apprentice into the business.

  • A breadth of experience and support is available which includes a buddy system to welcome you into MBDA, access to the mentoring scheme and regular informal meetings with other Early Careers Programme (ECP) members and managers.

  • You will also get fantastic opportunities to bring your technical knowledge to schools as a STEM ambassador.

    5 days paid study days to prepare for exams per year.

What are we looking for from you?

Candidates must have a minimum of 120 UCAS points either through:

  • a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma (DDM or above) in Engineering OR

  • 3 A-Levels – one of these MUST include Maths, in addition to one in Physics or a Technology subject (list of accepted subjects below).

    AND

  • GCSE Maths and English at Grade C / Level 4 or above

  • A dedicated attitude and be comfortable taking the initiative.

  • A willingness to learn and apply newly gained knowledge quickly.

  • To be capable of working as part of a team and on your own.

  • Ability to balance workload between further education and work commitments.

    (Technology subjects: Design and Technology, Product Design, Resistant Materials, Systems and Control, ICT, Computing, Digital Technology)
