Giving Back: Apprentices Help Local Charity on Life Skills Course

Every year we hold multiple Life Skills courses for our apprentices who are in their first and second year of their scheme. The courses, located in Wales, are designed to develop the apprentices' confidence and professional skillset in areas such as effective communication, presenting effectively and project management.

As part of their second course, our apprentices are asked to provide support to a local charity by setting different objectives that will be of benefit to the non-profit organisation. This year, we chose to support Value Independence - a charity that provides specialist support for all individuals in the local community of Milford Haven, enabling them to gain new skills, improve confidence and become more independent.

Working hard in order to plan their objectives, the apprentices committed to making a difference to the charity by utilising the skills they had been taught on the course. They were able to provide Value Independence with a lot of equipment such as tyres, puncture repair kits etc. for Bike Mobility. In addition, they also set up two contracts with both Halfords and a local bike shop to agree to a partnership to provide VI with any old (useable) equipment that can be utilised to maintain their bikes.

The group also managed to provide them with quotations and arrange visits from three companies for a disabled bathroom, kitchen and lift to be fitted at their base. This was highlighted as a key requirement from the charity because currently they do not have a disabled bathroom on site and therefore they have to walk 30 minutes to the local leisure centre or nursing home to use their facilities.
In an effort to raise the much needed funding for the bathroom, our apprentices set up a Crowd Funding page for the specialist disabled toilet which managed to achieve over £420 in four hours! They also entered into tough negotiations with local traders, managing to acquire many supplies for an additional outdoor eco toilet at zero cost.

We are extremely proud of the efforts from the apprentices and feel they really embodied our values in order to help a very worthy cause.
