MBDA has a long-standing capability in missile embedded software, responsible for all aspects of missile behaviour during operation. Our Guidance Control & Navigation specialists develop the specifications required for missile aerodynamics, seekers, propulsion units, fin actuators, altimeters and inertial measurement units (IMUs) along with their synchronicity. Preliminary designs for the mid-course and terminal guidance laws and the autopilot give way to detailed trade-off simulation studies, eventually yielding the optimised detailed design of G&C algorithms into flight software.

Hardware-in-the-Loop (HWIL) simulation is a technique to provide an effective platform for developing and testing real-time embedded systems. This enables MBDA to construct and use a range of complex simulations of modern weapon systems, employing Infra-red (IR) or radio-frequency (RF) sensors to analyse their performance against targets and counter-measures in both the infrared and radio wavebands.

MBDA is responsible for the design of many warheads and its expertise supports the whole product life-cycle, from the development of concept warhead solutions, through qualification, to life-extension of in-service warheads. Supporting skills include expertise in the characteristics of explosives, modelling and simulation of impact, explosive effects and lethality performance, warhead design, and the planning and safe conduct of trials and testing of explosive devices.
This capability is organised into the Anglo-French Complex Warheads Centre of Excellence located at Bolton, Stevenage and Le-Plessis Robinson in Paris, providing opportunities for working internationally with colleagues in France, Germany and Italy.

development of innovative architectures and the growing contribution of multiphysic
analyses. MBDA expertise covers all phases of the lifecycle: concept, development, qualification and in-service sustainment. Consequently the thermal analysis skills cover a wide field of applications and techniques requiring an in-depth knowledge of high temperature phenomena in particular (hypersonic,

energetic materials, safety, etc.)

Within our programmes, the B&P Directorate has accountability for centrally supervising the business part of the Programmes. It performs a variety of functions including:

  • Acting as the central hub for project management, project control and commercial/contract management support 
  • Centrally managing the corresponding skills and maintaining the overall consistency of business and project management processes
  • Ensuring that all projects have adequate controls in place in terms of resourced schedules, work breakdown structure, work package descriptions and cost collection systems. And monitoring and collating the internal and external reports of project performance against these topics
  • Supporting budget achievement by proposing adequate measures to balance risks and opportunities
  • Co-ordinating each sector's business plan targets 
  • Ensuring that all bids for new work are established in accordance with company processes

This Export Contract Management team ensure our business interests are safeguarded through the contract execution phase of the programmes, mitigating commercial risks and potential customer claims/disputes and maximising profitability by devising appropriate strategies for the resolution of disputes.

They participate in the establishment of the formal contract documentation with all export customers, ensuring the commercial efficacy of bids and proposals and providing a repository for all formal correspondence with the customer.

CUSTOMER SUPPORT AND SERVICES

Customer Support & Services (CSS) has overall responsibility for the definition, development and delivery of support and service packages for all MBDA products, with the aim of continually being able to meet the most demanding of our customers’ requirements.

This includes:

  • Developing and implementing affordable and innovative support solutions covering the entire range of prime equipment as well as the support equipment, training, documentation, test benches and simulators required.  This is under the control of the ILS Manager who is supported by a range of skills including supportability analysts, logistics modellers, technical authors and trainers.
  • Maintaining through life the product support policy for the MBDA product portfolio, up to and including disposal/de-militarisation.
  • Providing all required support services to our Customers for our in-service products, including ensuring that availability levels are maintained, technical assistance is provided as required, and modifications and mid-life updates are managed and implemented.  This is under the control of the Product Support Manager, who is supported by a range of skills including Field Service Engineers, trainers, fleet planners, asset managers and support engineers.

The Project Business Team supports the Head of Project/Chief Engineer by providing a focus on the business activities and contributing on a day-to-day basis to the project when dealing with business, contractual and customer/supplier matters in relation to the project. 

The Team includes all or part of the following seconded functions:

  • Project Control staff 
  • Domestic Commercial Operations staff

The Procurement Managers and the Finance Controllers report respectively to the Procurement Executive and the sector Financial Controller. The latter are involved by their representatives in the team for important and/or difficult issues.   • To maintain responsiveness to changing customer demands throughout the product life-cycle through the deployment of flexible and agile manufacturing resources, facilities and architectures with particular emphasis on in-service support to all UK HMG Services (e.g. UORs and/or surge demand)

The aim of the Improvement Directorate is to provide MBDA with a managed and integrated structure to improve Operational Excellence.

  • The Improvement Directorate has full responsibility for:
  • Defining and managing a global project architecture in order to serve shared and ambitious objectives
  • Ensuring the delivery of major transverse improvement projects
  • Covering the four countries
  • Strengthening synergies between the three countries already integrated
  • Involving Germany progressively to prepare the integration process
  • Addressing the consistency of local improvement initiatives across the countries and directorates
