Meet Sam - Working with powerful technology and inspiring colleagues

Powerful technology and inspiring colleagues – just two of the reasons that Principal Engineer Sam loves working here...

What do you do at MBDA?

I'm an electronics engineer working within the firing units team in the electronic engineering department. We oversee the technical design for electronics hardware, which can involve creating schematics, writing specifications, reviewing information from suppliers and creating data packs for equipment.

And what inspired you to join?

It was the opportunity to work right at the cutting edge of defence technology. The work here is new. It’s exciting. I wanted to work with technology and equipment I’d never experienced before.

Give us an example

We have an amazing oscilloscope here. It’s very high-tech and very high-speed. It’s a fun piece of equipment. It measures electronic signals in the picosecond range. You can’t do that at many other places.

Tell us about your career journey at MBDA

I joined as a technician, where I was thrown into the lab to test some items and figure out why they weren’t working as they should. It was incredibly enjoyable, and I’ve just continued to learn and develop from there. MBDA has provided me with loads of opportunities to grow, expand my knowledge and develop into the engineer I am today.

I’ve been in the same team for seven years, and my role has changed so much in that time. I’m still progressing, and I get to work with fantastic people on really complicated projects.

Finally, what’s been your proudest MBDA moment?

I implemented a design change into production, and it worked. My name’s on schematics and equipment that are in production now. That feels great.
