Mission Lead – Force Protection

Michael

Following a 37-year career in the Army the transition to industry has been very interesting and sometimes challenging, but I have had very good support from MBDA and my ex-military colleagues.

Having left the Army in 2017 and transitioned into a Civil Service role at Dstl, I was approached by MBDA in 2018 with an opportunity to interview for a position within the Programmes Directorate. Having previously served as SO2 GBAD, where I worked closely with MBDA and other Air Defence companies, I was already well-acquainted with their professionalism, capability, and collaborative ethos.

From 2018 to 2021, I served as Head of GBAD Capability Development, acting as the principal point of contact between the Programmes Directorate and the UK Ministry of Defence. In this role, I helped steer the successful introduction of Land Ceptor into service — a key milestone for UK Ground-Based Air Defence. Building on this success, I moved into the UK Sales & Business Development Directorate (2021–2023) as the GBAD WTL, where I led the Medium Range Air Defence (MRAD) campaign, securing the next major tranche of Land Ceptor (MRAD CUP1) for the UK MOD. In 2023, I assumed the role of Mission Lead – Force Protection, expanding my remit to include not only GBAD but also NBAD, LDEW, and the CAMM Family. This broader responsibility allowed me to influence capability development across multiple domains, ensuring a coherent and forward-looking Air Defence offering.

Following the successful contract award of MRAD CUP1 in 2025, I am set to transition in 2026 to a new Group-level Air Defence role within MBDA. This next step represents an exciting opportunity to oversee Business Development for Air Defence (Land & Maritime) across the entire MBDA enterprise — strengthening international collaboration, forging strategic alliances, and aligning national strengths with MBDA’s wider European and global ambitions.

My journey with MBDA has been both professionally rewarding and personally fulfilling. I am a co-founder of Mosaic, a community that highlights and celebrates ethnic diversity in MBDA, additionally, I have represent MBDA on external events, panels and podcasts on diversity and leadership. I continue to host MBDA site visits for various MOD customers and am the MBDA Ski representative for the Royal Artillery Alpine Ski Team.  The company’s commitment to innovation, partnership, and excellence has enabled me to continually grow while contributing to MBDA’s enduring success in the global defence landscape.
